Police are warning the public to be vigilant as we have become aware of a rise in telephone scam calls that are being made to elderly individuals across the County.

The individuals have received a call from someone who claimed to be from the Police or a “fraud squad” and stated that they need to transfer money to them, withdraw money or move it to a ‘safe account’.

When challenged, the caller would tell the victim to call 999 to confirm the call was genuine. We believe the fraudsters were hoping to be able to stay on the phone line and trick victims into carrying out withdrawals or transfers.

However the individuals who received the calls fully disconnected it, resulting in them coming through to our 999 line when they made the subsequent call.

If you receive any calls of this type we advise that you put the phone down straight away.
