Salvation Army launches Christmas toy appeal to support struggling families

The Salvation Army is urging people across Gloucester, Cheltenham and Tewkesbury to help bring joy to local children this festive season by donating new toys to its annual Christmas Present Appeal.

For many families already facing impossible financial choices between heating, food and household bills, Christmas can be a time of stress rather than celebration. The charity says demand for support is rising, with more families expected to need help this year.

Last Christmas, the Salvation Army in Gloucester and Cheltenham distributed more than 1,500 toy parcels and the same number of food parcels. With financial pressures worsening, the Gloucester team plans to provide ALDI vouchers this year instead of food parcels to allow families more choice.

Cheltenham Salvation Army leaders Rachel and Tom Dunham said the public’s generosity helps ensure children don’t miss out.

“Christmas is meant to be a time of love and joy, but for many it’s a time of despair,” they said. “Every child deserves to wake up on Christmas morning with a smile on their face.”

Donations of new, unwrapped toys are being collected at both churches, with specific requests this year for teenage boys’ gifts and items for babies aged 0–1.

Gifts will be sorted and distributed through local schools, social services and community groups. Suggested items include educational toys, baby clothes, books, dolls and action figures, sports equipment, toiletries, winter clothing and gift vouchers for older children.

People can also donate through The Entertainer’s Big Toy Appeal until 29 November. For every toy purchased to donate, The Entertainer will add another, doubling the impact.
