Fire service issues water safety warning as warmer weather arrives

Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service is urging residents to stay safe around water as part of a national awareness campaign.

The Be Water Aware campaign, led by the National Fire Chiefs Council, runs until May 3 and highlights the risks of accidental drowning.

Figures show more than 1,600 people across the UK lost their lives in such incidents between 2019 and 2024, with over half occurring in inland waters like rivers and lakes.

Fire crews say many incidents happen unexpectedly, often due to slips, trips or falls near the water’s edge.

They are also warning against jumping into open water to cool down, as cold water shock can cause panic and breathing difficulties.

Residents are being advised to keep a safe distance from water, avoid alcohol near rivers and lakes, and know what to do in an emergency.

Officials say simple precautions can help prevent tragedies as more people head outdoors in the warmer weather.
