Council supports local employers with apprenticeship training

Gloucestershire County Council has funded training for nearly 150 apprentices in local businesses since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This week is National Apprenticeship Week which aims to promote the great work being carried out by employers and apprentices across the country. Since the start of the pandemic, the county council has supported 42 local businesses by funding the training for 145 apprentices.

The Apprenticeship Levy, which was introduced in April 2017, has enabled the council to transfer up to 25% of its annual levy contribution to local employers to support training for their apprentices – both newly recruited staff as well as to develop the skills of existing staff.

A local employer, who has received funding for training apprenticeship programmes, said: “The levy transfers have been hugely beneficial and has definitely enabled us to support more staff. This in itself is motivational to them. I have had support and guidance from Gloucestershire County Council at all times for which I am immensely grateful. I hope we can continue to use the system as it enhances the reputation and standing of care staff especially.”

Cllr Lynden Stowe, cabinet member for finance and change, said: “The development of our future workforce is so important and I am delighted that the council has supported local businesses with training for apprentices, such as training programmes for an Adult Social Worker to Senior Production Chef, as well as programmes such as Engineering Technician and Early Years Educator.”

Cllr Patrick Molyneux, cabinet member for economy, education and skills, said: “This year’s theme for National Apprenticeship Week is ‘build the future’ and apprenticeships can help individuals gain the skills and knowledge they need through training and experience to build their careers and their future.”
